Public monitoring and review of government commitments towards sustainable development

In modern democratic polities central government activity is subject to scrutiny from many sources including internal audits, assessment and commentary from legislatures, the judiciary and other administrative levels, from societal groups of all kinds, and the media. One particular kind of scrutiny has proven particularly effective - oversight carried out by organizations with some form of official remit to monitor government activity in relation to the environment and sustainable development.
